Book Club to Meet Wednesday, October 10 at 6:30

Dinner at Laura Vinson's House to discuss The Rise and Fall of Alexandria: Birthplace of the Modern World, by Justin Pollard and Howard Reid.

Speculation about a dystopian future in September yields to scrutiny of the magnificent past in October. Laura Vinson has chosen The Rise and Fall of Alexandria:  Birthplace of the Modern World, by Justin Pollard and Howard Reid, as the October Book Club selection.  For those more familiar with ancient Greece and Rome, this book opens a door to a third great intellectual center that rivaled both in science, art, medicine, and engineering.  It also documents the destructive  effect that religious intolerance can have on intellectual and social progress, a message that may resonate today.

Justin Pollard's credits include both scholarly works and serving as historical consultant on British and American TV shows and movies ranging from "The Tudors" to Pirates of the Caribbean.  Co-author Reid, is a Cambridge-trained anthropologist and documentary film maker.  The book is available at Amazon, on Kindle, and at the Sacramento Public Library.

Laura plans to provide appetizers, main dish and side dishes (Thanks, Laura!).  If you would like to contribute to the menu, beverages would be helpful.  If you are going to attend, please contact Laura at LVinson@egusd.net.  She will email directions to her house in Elk Grove.
