Life, death and hope in Mumbai

Book club's selection focuses on struggles of slum dwellers

"Behind the Beautiful Forevers:  Life, Death, and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity" by Katherine Boo will be discussed at the September meeting of the book club. The book was on the New York Times list of the 10 Best Books of 2012.

This National Book Award-winning study of life in Annawadi, a Mumbai slum, is marked by reporting so rigorous it recalls the muckraking and characters  evoked by  Dickens, the review said. “The slum dwellers have a skillful and empathetic chronicler in Boo, who depicts them in all their humanity and ruthless, resourceful glory."

Those who attended our July meeting at which "Working in the Shadows” by Gabriel Thompson  was discussed might be interested in an Aug. 11 article in the business section of  the Times about the Workers Defense Project in Austin, Texas.

The Sept. 11 meeting, which includes a potluck dinner, will start at 6:30 p.m. at the home of Ross and Liz Kuehner in Sacramento. For more information, contact Elizabeth at elizard@surewest.net.
