Book Club: "Walden" - June 8th

Book Club to discuss Walden, by Henry David Thoreau, considered one of the fundamental masterpieces of American literature.

The next Book Club meeting will be on Wednesday, June 8th at the home of Bill and Nancy Myers, 10300 Sheldon Rd., Elk Grove. There will be a potluck dinner at 6:30. The hosts will prepare meat and vegetarian main dishes and provide wine to go with them. Other additions are welcome, but if you do not have time to prepare something you are welcome to come anyway.

Walden is considered one of the fundamental masterpieces of American literature that has had a role in defining who, culturally and even politically, we think we are as a people. The book club discussion will examine this work both as literature---why it is considered a literary masterpiece--and as social thought that has influenced whoever we imagine ourselves being today. Some editions bundle this iconic collection of essays together with the somewhat related essay Civil Disobedience, which the hosts suggest including in the reading if it is convenient for you.

Please email Bill to let him know if you plan to attend.
