Underside of American economy

Book club to look at life of immigrant workers

What is it like to do the back-breaking work of immigrants? That’s the focus of Working in the Shadows: A Year Doing the Jobs Most Americans Won’t Do. The book will be discussed at the July10 meeting of the book club.

Author Gabriel Thompson spent a year working alongside Latino immigrants, who initially thought he was either crazy or an undercover immigration agent. Combining personal narrative with investigative reporting, Thompson shines a light on the underside of the American economy, exposing harsh working conditions, union busting, and lax government enforcement. He tells the stories of workers, undocumented immigrants and desperate U.S. citizens alike, forced to live with chronic pain in the pursuit of $8 an hour.

The club will meet at the Zinfandel Grille, 2384 Fair Oaks Blvd., Sacramento, at 6:30 p.m.
