Tom Rose

The former club president was a Peace Corps volunteer and longtime state worker

Tom Rose, who majored in government at Harvard College, joined the Peace Corps after graduation in 1967. He served as a high school teacher in Western Samoa for two-and-a-half years.

For a 12-year period beginning in 1970, Tom worked as a staff member for the California Assembly Ways and Means Committee and later the Senate Education Committee. He then took a six-month assignment with the Oklahoma House of Representatives, where he developed a revised state revenue estimate in the midst of the state’s unprecedented oil boom.

Returning to Sacramento in 1983, Tom worked with the California Department of Education for 24 years, helping shape standards for teacher preparation programs and professional development programs. He retired in 2006.

Tom, a Sacramento resident since 1970, was active in the Sacramento Harvard Club from 1970 through 1982 and served as its president from 1980 through mid-1982. He appreciates the revitalization and renaissance of the club in recent years under the leadership of Eric Douglas and his team.

One of Tom’s favorite activities for the club is hosting the annual spring reception for area high school seniors who have been accepted by Harvard.  "What a brilliant, amazing group!" he said.
