"Desert Queen"
Biography explores the life of Gertrude Bell, a key player in shaping the modern Middle East
"Desert Queen" by Janet Wallach will be discussed at the Aug. 12 meeting of the book club. The biography looks at the life of Gertrude Bell, a contemporary of T.E. Lawrence. She was a British adventurer and political officer who came to play a vital role in shaping the Middle East after World War I.
The book is a comprehensive portrait of an influential and intelligent woman who led a full but not always happy life during an era when women were typically relegated to much more insignificant roles. For more background on Bell, click here.
The meeting will start at 6:30 with a potluck dinner at the home of Alice Schilla. Please let her know if you plan to attend and whether you would like to bring a cold main course dish or salad, appetizer, dessert, or beverage. She will provide wine. To RSVP or get directions, contact Alice by email. Her address is amschilla1@yahoo.com.
