Special Invitation from the Sacramento Stanford Alumni Association
Join Us for "The Love and Landscape of Caregiving," a talk and panel discussion at the Sacramento Asian Cultural Center (ACC) on Tuesday, October 8 (6 PM to 7:30 PM PDT)
The Sacramento Stanford Alumni Association has graciously invited members of the Harvard Club of Sacramento to this event, featuring Susan Golden, Sc.D, Stanford DCI (Adjunct Professor), who received her doctorate of science from the Harvard School of Public Health; completed her post-doctoral fellowship at UCSF in Health Policy; and attended Harvard Business School.
- A new AARP report estimates that 38 million unpaid caregivers (11% of the US) provided an equivalent value of $600 billion of care in 2023... But beyond statistics, each of us are likely not far removed from a person who provides care for an adult loved one. Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter once said, "There are only four kinds of people in the world: those who have been caregivers, those who are currently caregivers, those who will be caregivers and those who will need caregivers."
- Join us for an exploration of the state of unpaid family caregiving in the United States and the real-life experiences of Stanford Alumni who have supported loved ones while juggling jobs, families, and their own health/well-being. This program consists of two parts: (a.) "The Landscape of Caregiving:" a talk by Susan Golden, Sc.D, Stanford DCI and author of Stage (Not Age): How to Understand and Serve People Over 60, providing an overview of the current state of unpaid family caregiving. (b.) "The Love of Caregiving," a panel discussion including author of Already Toast: Caregiving and Burnout in America Kate Washington (PhD, '99), Barbara Lemus ('76), Diane Caine Shirey (‘79): ALL Sacramento-area Stanford alumni who have cared for (or are caring for) an aging adult; this conversation will highlight personal experiences, challenges, and local resources.
- The Sacramento Stanford Alumni Association (SSAA) is excited to offer this hybrid event, held in-person at the ACC Senior Services, or if you can't attend in-person, choose to do so online/livestream. See https://groups.stanford.edu/topics/9206/events/93193 for further details.
