Satan’s Cesspool* — Pre-Halloween hike Adventure
Join us for a scenic adventure, fresh air, and great company!
Meet at 9:00 a.m., Saturday, October 10, in the parking lot on Salmon Falls Road (in El Dorado County) that is immediately north of Salmon Falls Bridge over the South Fork of the American River. There is some parking to the south of the bridge as well, but we should meet in the north side parking lot. The cost to park is $11, which can be paid via a QR link and a credit card.
The hike is about 7½ miles and is rated Moderate by AllTrails. It's an out-and-back with the low points (river level) at the beginning and at the turnaround point. There is unmistakable elevation gain and loss throughout, but nothing is especially steep, e.g. nothing even approaching something where one would need to use hands. Except in the last hundred yards or so of the approach to the riverbank, the trail base is dirt the whole way, although sometimes there are rocks in the dirt. The part very near the river is almost all rock-covered.
We recommend that each participant bring at least two liters of water (probably more if the day turns out to be an unseasonably hot one), some snacks, and sunscreen. I believe the hike will take between 3 and 4½ hours depending on walking speed and the frequency and length of stops.
